This artistic backpack is inspired by a beaded headdress called a mpaan , made in the Kuba Kingdom (in present-day Democratic Republic of the Congo) between the 19th and 20th centuries. The decorative details recall this historic ceremonial headdress, while Sprayground’s iconic shark mouth is integrated into the design.

Traditionally, the mpaan was worn during funerals and important ceremonies and was a clear symbol of status within the complex Kuba social system. This headdress was reserved especially for elderly women who held titles. The backpack pays homage to this tradition with the use of decorative beads and shells that recall the original craftsmanship.
